 Our Doctors and Visiting Specialists Dr. Schaper and Dr. Gavaletz both have experience treating dogs and cats, as well as many other exotic mammals and reptiles. Rabbits, ferrets, hedgehogs, and iguanas are just a sample of the types of species you might meet in the waiting room at Branford Veterinary Hospital. If your pet requires more advanced treatment or diagnostics, we are able to call in specialists to perform ultrasound and surgical care here in our hospital.

Robert Schaper, V.M.D.
Dr. Schaper has been working with animals for over 35 years. His experiences include working in a zoo, studying bats in Mexico, and performing biopsies on whales. He has served the Branford community since 1988.
Dr. Schaper holds a B.S. in Biology from Gettysburg College, an M.A. in Theology from the University of Chicago Divinity School, an M.A. in Entomology from the University of Arizona, and a V.M.D from the University of Pennsylvania (1983).
In his free time, Dr. Schaper enjoys woodworking, gardening, boating, and fishing. He lives in Guilford with his family, dog (Scout), cat (Fox), ponys (Fritz &Hobbit), horse (Lola), donkey (Sting), and several turtles.

Scott Gavaletz, D.V.M.
Dr. Gavaletz has been working in the animal field for 14 years. He worked as an emergency veterinary technician before and during veterinary school. He has been working at Branford Veterinary Hospital since 2008.
Dr. Gavaletz holds a B.S. degree with departmental honors in Zoology from Southern Connecticut State University, and a D.V.M from the University of Florida (2002). His research work involved mycoplasma infection in alligators.
In his free time Dr. Gavaletz enjoys golf, cooking, and is an avid Florida sports fan. He lives in New Haven with his family and 3 cats (Ptolemy, Heddy, Shaina).

Lori Montresor, D.V.M.
Dr. Montresor has been working in the animal field since 1998. Her experience includes working as a veterinary technician for two years prior to attending veterinary school, high volume spay and neuter programs, and shelter medicine. She has been working at Branford Veterinary Hospital since July 2011.
Dr. Montresor holds a B.A. degree in Biology from Keene State College, and a D.V.M. from Ross University (2004).
In her free time Dr. Montresor enjoys traveling, cooking, hiking, tennis, and the outdoors. She resides in West Hartford with her three dogs (Major, Jenny, Mr. Twigs) and cat (Trina).

Surgical Care Specialists
Steve Heyman, V.M.D., D.A.C.V.S. is a board certified veterinary surgeon who visits our practice to perform complex soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries.
Dr. Heyman obtained his V.M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1987), and completed his residency in surgery there as well (1993).
Dr. Heyman is the founder and owner of Surgical Care Specialists, a veterinary surgical practice in Connecticut.

Coastal Veterinary Imaging
Patricia Hogan, D.V.M., D.A.C.V.R. is a board certified radiologist who visits our practice to perform ultrasound studies for our clients. In addition, she provides expert opinions on challenging or ambiguous x-rays.
